Here's my list of must eats in Seoul...I really only spent a few short hours roaming the streets and alleys of Insadong so I'm sure this list is lacking...but don't worry, eventually I will head back for more research :)
Sweet:
Jipangei ice cream: Ice cream in a funny shaped cone tube made of corn cake, take a look and try to not let your imagination get the best of you. Order the Vanilla...SO good. Reminds me of a chick-fil-a ice dream. Dreamy indeed!
Hadduk/Korean donut: We were curious as to why people were standing in line for this fried goodness but after we had a few bites we realized why...its filling was some sweet concoction of melted brown sugar jelly deliciousness. Jason wanted to get back in line after we fought over the last few bites. Good news is I've found a place where I can get my hadduk fix back in NYC...K town of course. Grace Street, see you soon! :)
Sweet custard bread: An order comes with 10. We finished the entire bag but I think we could have stopped at 5. The inside wasn't as sweet as the Haddock...the filling tasted like a slightly sweet bean paste.
Dessert (what I imagine is the Korean version of panna cotta)
I ate this as the last course of a Korean wedding reception. It was a slightly sweet, light custard dessert. I finished mine and then immediately started eyeing Jason's.
Savory:
Spicy chicken skewer/street meat: chicken & scallion on a stick, he asked if we wanted it spicy and so 3 sauces later BOOM...Yummo in my tummo & mouth was on fire. Soothed it with some mango juice = perfection. If we weren't in a rush I would have ordered another to go.
Bibimbap & Spicy Pork w/ all the Korean trimmings - I think this goes without saying. We walked into a random restaurant off one of the side alleys in Insadong, it was insagoooood! Order the plum ice tea to wash it down, deliciously refreshing. At first bite I thought the bibimbap needed something...Jason ordered red sauce... then this happened...partay!!!
Whenever you can, wherever you can try the kimchee. Lots of different styles, all delicious!
